As Netflix finally shuts the gate on Stranger Things, it’s time to say goodbye to Hawkins and with it, one of television’s most recognisable homes. For nearly a decade, the wood-panelled, awkwardly decorated Byers House served as an unlikely icon of sci-fi nostalgia, providing the setting for some of the series’ most significant moments. Now, travellers can relive some of the show’s early magic for themselves.

A new fan-funded project through Airbnb is offering Stranger Things-lovers the opportunity to spend the night inside the real-life Byers House. Complete with period-authentic VHS tapes, artworks and a heap of hidden ’80s movie references, the unique stay invites guests to relive the horror and mystery of the Duffer brothers’ smash hit. So, ready your D&D characters, pop the Eggos in the toaster and settle in, we’re heading back to the Upside Down.

Stranger Things Airbnb

First released in 2016, Stranger Things is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. While the sleepy Midwestern suburb could pass for almost anywhere in Middle America, the series was primarily filmed in Fayetteville, Georgia, which is where you’ll find the Byers House.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom family home is set across a single storey and was used to film all of the exterior scenes across the series’ five engrossing seasons. Much like the farmhouse from Hamnet, this vacation rental has been meticulously designed to recreate the atmosphere and energy of the series. From the artworks depicting Will the Wise to the creeping black tendrils that stretch up the cornices of each bedroom, the Stranger Things Airbnb is a true one-of-a-kind experience for TV and movie junkies.

Byers House Design

According to the owners of the property, it took more than a year for fans and professional set designers to develop the interior, which fuses era-appropriate functional props with modern appliances. Inside, you’ll find midcentury-modern lamps and CRT televisions, cautiously placed alongside a modern washer/dryer and a 75-inch Samsung Frame TV for binging all five seasons of the ’80s-inspired series.

Guests can also play Dungeons & Dragons in the bunk bed room, play Amiga 500 games in Jonathan Byers’ room and listen to a selection of vinyl records. The real centrepiece of the Byers House, however, is the living room.

Resting just above the mismatched furnishings sits an interactive Christmas light wall inspired by the events of Stranger Things season one. In the first chilling instalment of the Netflix series, Winona Ryder’s Joyce uses the makeshift “Ouija Wall” to create a communication bridge between the Upside Down and Hawkins, eventually using it to locate her missing son Will. In the Stranger Things Airbnb, guests can play out their own Upside Down narrative, using the interactive light wall to display messages, communicate themes and recreate some of the series’ most poignant moments.

Remarkably, the 1900-built Byers House is in no way affiliated with Netflix, but rather a fan-funded project. In 2022, the Fayetteville property was purchased at auction and crowdfunded via the Arrived investment platform. Now 100 per cent owned by individuals who are fans of Stranger Things, the property is actively sharing opportunities for additional fans to get involved. According to the official listing, Stranger Things lovers can buy shares in the property for as little as USD$100, receiving a share of the rental income and property value appreciation.

The Real-Life Stranger Things House

Located in Fayetteville, around 20 minutes south of Atlanta, the Byers House Airbnb is smack-bang in the middle of Stranger Things territory. Much of the franchise was filmed in the surrounding areas, including the neighbouring Jacksonville, which played the role of downtown Hawkins. For travellers looking to immerse themselves in the ’80s-inspired series, there is no better place to set up shop.

As the owner wrote in the official listing: “This isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a one-of-a-kind destination to make unforgettable memories in a setting that blurs the line between fiction and reality.”

The Byers House Airbnb is available to rent through the global accommodation platform now. Prices vary depending on timing, with the next available rental setting you back AUD$4,800 at the time of writing. As you might expect, bookings are essential, particularly in the wake of the series’ fifth and final season. Visit the platform for more information on the Stranger Things Airbnb or book your stay inside Hawkins’ most iconic home.
