At Long Last, TAG Heuer’s Seafarer Resurfaces from the Deep

The master of the racetrack is venturing into not-so-uncharted waters with the new Carrera Chronograph Seafarer.
  • Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer has confirmed a new Seafarer reference for 2026.
  • The Carrera Chronograph Seafarer is inspired by a historic 1949 Heuer model produced for Abercrombie & Fitch and features a beige opalin dial highlighted by teal and yellow accents.
  • It houses a dedicated “TIDE” pusher at nine o’clock, which rotates the colour-coded disc to display the known tide times at your location.
  • The TAG Heuer Seafarer watch is powered by the in-house TH20-04 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve.
  • The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer price is AUD $13,250 and it arrives on a seven-row beads-of-rice steel bracelet, along with an additional textile strap with blue stitching.

TAG Heuer might be best-known for its prowess on the racetrack, but in 2026, the Swiss luxury watch brand is taking to the high seas. At LVMH Watch Week 2026, the La Chaux-de-Fonds icon unveiled the next chapter in its illustrious maritime story, announcing the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer release. A vintage-inspired piece that harks back to a special edition made for fashion royalty, the latest watch, quite literally, bridges the gap between time and tide.

For most watch fans, TAG Heuer’s connection to sailing is best personified by the much-loved Skipper range. A model born on the water, its origins date back to 1967 when Jack Heuer famously equipped the crew of the Intrepid yacht with Heuer Aquastar countdown timers during the America’s Cup regatta. A pivotal moment in sporting history, that decision led to the launch of 1968 Heuer Skipper chronograph just one year later, but it might surprise you to know that the watchmaker’s maritime legacy began much earlier.

In 1947, Walter Haynes, then-president of Abercrombie & Fitch, shared a tide-watch patent with Charles-Edouard Heuer. The two discussed a collaborative model and just two years later, the 1949 Heuer Solunar, the world’s first wristwatch to display permanent tide times, was unveiled. The 1950 Heuer Mareographe Seafarer chronograph followed, cementing Heuer’s legacy in the world of maritime timing. It is precisely these two models that TAG Heuer is channeling with its new 2026 Carrera Chronograph Seafarer.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer

Designed as a true tool watch, the Seafarer features a unique tide display function. Visible at nine o’clock, the complication features a dynamic disc that rotates once every 29.5 days, tracking the lunar cycle that governs the tides. From there, a fixed 24-hour ring (numbered 0 to 12 twice for AM and PM) frames the subdial, while a dedicated “TIDE” pusher is found at nine o’clock.

To set the tide display function, you simply need to look up the time of the next high tide at your location from a trusted source, then press the “TIDE” button until the white hand points to that exact time. Once set, the complication continuously displays whether the tide is rising or falling, sharing insight into the approximate time of the next high or low tide.

It’s an innovative feature and one that could get a forlorn sailor out of a tight jam, but moreover, it makes for an impressive visual balance. Much like the recent Skipper and Carrera releases, the TAG Heuer Seafarer fuses form and function in a manner that isn’t overly cluttered. The cream-coloured dial has a beautiful vintage tone, matched by “Intrepid Teal” and mustard yellow accents on the 30-minute chronograph counter sub-dial. It’s vibrant and full of life, but with the perfect amount of sophisticated restraint.

Reshaping the Design

The case silhouette, however, is a little different. At 42mm in diameter, the Seafarer follows the familiar dimensions of the existing glassbox Carrera lineup, albeit with one TIDE pusher-sized difference. Jutting out from the bezel-less design at 9 o’clock, the chunky pusher is far from subtle, and while some watch critics may lament the design choice, it’s all smooth sailing to me.

Watches like the Seafarer are special because of their unique functions and quirky additions; burying them amid a sea of sameness just feels…wrong. The TIDE pusher is big and bold, reshaping the streamlined silhouette of the chronograph to appear more robust, technical and intentional.

Inside, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer watch is powered by the calibre TH20-04, a modified version of the chronograph movement that appears regularly in the watchmaker’s current line-up. The bi-directional winding calibre features 80 hours of power reserve and is backed by a vertical clutch for a smooth timekeeping experience. On the caseback, you’ll also find the Victory Wreath, a symbol of success, which the brand explains echoes Jack Heuer’s tradition of gifting watches to racing drivers and champions in the 1970s.

TAG Heuer’s Seafarer History

Importantly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Seafarer in recent memory. In 2024, TAG Heuer revived the model with a special edition reference created in collaboration with watch publication HODINKEE.

That release, which was limited to 968 models, was a modern interpretation of the original 1968 Seafarer. It featured a black opalin dial inspired by the Heuer Seafarer Reference 2446C, alongside bold blue accents on the sub-counters. This time around, TAG Heuer has gone for a more neutral aesthetic, and the result is spectacular.
