20 Years Later, Ardbeg’s ‘Most Wanted’ Whisky Finally Arrives

I’ve often thought of whisky as time captured in a bottle; a sort-of capsule of moments and milestones distilled down into one all-encompassing spirit. Through age and environment, the liquid takes on certain characteristics, enveloping a unique profile that serves as an amalgamation of every craftsperson that has carefully presided over it. But time isn’t always a good thing; just ask the dedicated fanbase of Islay whisky label Ardbeg.

For over two decades, the group, which affectionately goes by the moniker ‘The Committee’, has been calling out for a cask-strength edition of the smoky icon Ardbeg Ten. The label’s signature release, the Ten is a gateway dram that often serves as the entry point for new fans of heavily peated whisky. Rich, decadent and layered with thick olfactory plumes of smoke, it offers the complete Ardbeg experience. However, for true collectors, such as those in The Committee, a bit of extra oomph is never a bad thing. At long last, their time has come.

In answer to The Committee’s pleas, Ardbeg has officially announced a new cask-strength edition of its classic 10-year-old single malt. Matured in hand-selected casks, uniquely filled with spirit at an unusually high strength, this bottling brings an unrivalled intensity to an Ardbeg classic, but it won’t last forever.

Ardbeg 10 Year Old Cask Strength Edition

The Ardbeg 10 Cask Strength Edition is a renewed take on the Islay single malt Scotch whisky label’s signature release. Bursting with rich aromas of tar and sea spray and smooth, sweet flavours, this rare edition of Ten is bottled at 61.7% ABV, making it the highest strength of any Committee Release to date.

It follows the principles of Ardbeg distillation, whereby peaty, smoky whisky is prioritised. The flagship Ten has long been revered by Committee members as the ultimate expression of the Distillery’s smoky
style. A cask-strength edition has topped their most-wanted list for years, since a highly limited (and even more highly coveted) release was shared in Japan in 2003.

Led by Ardbeg director of distilling, whisky creation and whisky stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, the revered label set out to revamp its signature spirit in its members’ honour. American oak bourbon casks were hand-selected for the project, including experimental barrels unusually filled with undiluted spirit. The result, according to master blender Gillian MacDonald, is an Ardbeg of incredible intensity.

“This cask-strength Ardbeg Ten is a momentous celebration of our distillery’s classic style,“ MacDonald said. “Created by Dr Bill and myself from casks filled with new-make spirit at a higher-than-usual strength, it has all the flavours Committee members know and love, infused with a new intensity. Those who are lucky enough to lay their hands on a bottle will find aromas of toffee, tar, with classic notes of fennel and sea spray, and sweet sooty tastes of peat moss, malt and smoked cinnamon – amplified in an unforgettable dram.“

For MacDonald, the release of the Ardbeg 10 Year Old Cask Strength Edition is momentous in two ways. Not only does it mark the arrival of a much-anticipated new expression, it also represents the first Committee edition unveiled during her tenure as co-chair, along with distillery manager Bryony
McNiven. It’s a remarkable occasion that isn’t lost on either of them.

“It’s fantastic to finally be sharing it with the Committee,“ McNiven said. “What a dram – a perfect balance of wood smoke, citrus sweetness and salt.“

As with all good things, the Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength Edition won’t last forever. The Islay icon has confirmed that the new expression will be released especially for members of the Ardbeg Committee and will be available online and in Embassies from 24 February 2026.

Only a limited number of bottles will hit shelves, with a small number of bottles to be made available to purchase in-person at the distillery. So, if the Ardbeg 10 Cask Strength Edition is on your wishlist, a trip to the tiny island of Islay may well be on the cards, lest you wait another two decades.
