- The latest Australian Limited Edition is a collaboration between TAG Heuer and Paxton Wong, one of the nation’s most dedicated watch collectors.
- The TAG Heuer Carrera Australian Limited Edition is limited to just 75 individually numbered pieces and is priced at AUD$11,800.
For Australian watch collector Paxton Wong, time is a fascinating concept. The Watchfest founder has long been regarded as one of the industry’s most fervent advocates, a central figure in horology’s collector-driven revival. With an encyclopaedic knowledge and a Rolodex that would make the GPHG blush, Wong is the kind of watch lover that wears his heart on his wrist. And like so many other connoisseurs, his passion runs more than skin deep.
“The physics of time; that’s what got me into watch collecting,” Wong reveals. “It always comes down to springs and gears, that’s really what runs all the mechanisms in watches, but that is quite an intriguing geometry. It reflects the circle of life in a way. That’s what got me into timekeeping, and how we keep accurate time always fascinates me.”
That natural curiosity has formed the backbone of his approach as a collector and, increasingly, a community organiser. Over the years, Wong’s influence has helped shape a more open and engaged watch culture in Australia; one that has spurred greater conversation, learning, and, in a huge win for the local market, a new TAG Heuer Carrera Australian Limited Edition.

TAG Heuer Carrera Australian Limited Edition
The first Australian exclusive since the 2024 Carrera Tourbillon, the latest Carrera Australian Limited Edition chronograph returns to more traditional territory. Drawing significant inspiration from two iconic Heuer references, the unique timepiece feels like a fitting continuation of the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture’s house style, rather than a kitschy take on Australiana.
As Wong explains, that was firmly by design.
“Well, the release of the Glassbox Carrera in 2023 caught our attention,“ he says. “Then it came out with the blue and then with the reverse panda. So, it came to a point where we had a Zoom session with Nick Biebuyck (TAG Heuer Heritage Director) and quite a few of us actually voiced an opinion to say that Australia was really due for a Limited Edition.“
“Aussie enthusiasts are quite a strong, passionate bunch. We mean business, to be honest, but the rest of the world tends to neglect us a little bit. So we got talking and that was the beginning of the Australian Carrera.“

Design Process
From there, the project evolved organically. Ideas were thrown around—some better than others. From a Bondi Beach-inspired colourway to an Uluru edition with Paspaley pearls, and even a case shape redesign, there was no shortage of ideas on the table. The challenge, Wong says, was finding a design that felt representative of the true Australian identity.
“We wanted to explore what is really, truly Australian and when we asked the group that question, we actually said mateship,“ he explains. “The brotherhood bonding, sisterhood bonding, mateship bonding in Australia is very, very strong and that’s evident in our watch community.“
With that in mind, the goal shifted. Paxton and his consortium of collectors moved to create a watch that felt like it embodied the very essence of Australian culture, rather than simply reflecting national iconography. The Australian exclusive Carrera needed to be a watch that had one foot planted firmly in the past and the other stepping towards a bold new future. The final design balances both.

Vintage References
The 39mm Carrera Australian Limited Edition features a silver Côtes de Genève–style dial, a texture rarely seen in modern TAG Heuer releases, paired with black azurage subdials and blue lacquered accents. On the underside, the timepiece is engraved with ‘Australian Limited Edition’ and is individually numbered. The open caseback design also reveals the in-house Calibre TH20-00 automatic movement which features bidirectional winding and 80 hours of power reserve.
Importantly, the design speaks to TAG Heuer’s remarkable history and lineage. Wong reveals that the Carrera Australian Limited Edition is actually inspired by two iconic watches from the brand’s illustrious portfolio, both tied to motorsport.
The first was the Heuer 1158 CHN, the gold one-of-one Carrera that former TAG Heuer CEO Jack Heuer gifted to Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson. That watch, engraved with a personal message, became known as the “Success Watch,” a symbol of respect between two people who admired each other’s craft.
The second was the Autavia 1163, famously associated with Swiss driver Jo Siffert. Its bold black-and-blue layout and distinctive visual clarity helped define an era of Heuer design. Both pieces blended performance with personality and, more importantly for Wong, both came from relationships. That thread of connection, rather than pure aesthetics, was precisely the foundation for the TAG Heuer Carrera Australian Limited Edition.

‘WWJHD?‘
“We looked a little bit at history, and we actually realised that when Jack Heuer made the first Carrera, he was actually making it for Ronnie Peterson; the one-of-one gold Carrera. That was, I believe, the first time you saw the Côtes de Genève dial,“ Wong tells me.
“Jack Heuer then made a watch a few years later for Jo Siffert; that was of course, the Autavia, the 1163. So, when you look at it more broadly, Jack Heuer was making watches for his friends, his mates, and what better way to share your passion?“
“With that idea in mind, we asked ourselves ‘What would Jack Heuer do?’“
With the goal of taking the best of what Jack Heuer did in the very first Carrera with the Côtes de Genève dial and fusing it with the ground-breaking Autavia 1163, Wong handed his plans to his son Brandon, who worked on a render. From there, they adapted and altered the design, toying with the case dimensions before ultimately landing on the slimmer 39mm profile.
“The 1163 is just legendary in TAG Heuer history,“ Wong tells me. “Then when you see the Côtes de Genève dial, I mean, it hasn’t really been seen since the 1960s-70s. It really is great to see it back on a TAG Heuer watch.“

TAG Heuer and Australia
For Wong, the significance of the new Carrera Australian Limited Edition goes beyond the watch itself. What started as a few collectors sharing ideas turned into a genuine group effort, shaped by curiosity and a shared love of great design. Perhaps that’s the most Australian aspect of the entire project: a bunch of enthusiasts, united by the mateship of collecting, creating something they can all proudly call their own.
“Never would I have thought I would be involved in such a project. To be involved, it is very, very special.“
“I think that the DNA speaks for itself,“ Wong says. “It’s not just symbolic of what we feel in Australia, the mateship, but I believe it really embodies TAG Heuer DNA, as well.“
