South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu is set to bring his unique blend of cultural craftsmanship and modern luxury to Cape Town. The multi-hyphenate has teamed up with LVMH-backed luxury hotel operator Belmond to unveil a stunning new two-storey Afro-modernist sanctuary housed within the iconic Mount Nelson resort. Rich with nods to traditional African arts and capped with what Magugu describes as an ‘English sensibility’, his first foray into the world of hospitality design is a remarkable fusion of creativity and curation.
Not that we should be surprised.
For just on a decade, the Johannesburg-based Magugu has pushed the boundaries of contemporary fashion design. His womenswear collections bridge art history with cultural nuance, typified by sharp tailoring, bold prints and textiles that weave imagery into their storytelling. The Thebe Magugu Suite might be vastly different in terms of medium, but the Afro-Modernist philosophy for which the designer is known is undeniable.

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town
Nestled between the slopes of Table Mountain and the vibrant Cape Town city centre, Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town is an oasis that has captivated travellers since the late 19th century. Affectionately known to the locals as ‘The Nellie’, the legendary property is framed by craggy coastlines, expansive beaches and verdant wine regions, just a stone’s throw from the creative hub of Kloof Street.

Thebe Magugu Suite
For Magugu, whose work regularly explores African identity and contemporary elegance, the historic wing along Palm Avenue has become a dynamic new canvas. The designer worked in collaboration with StudioLandt to create the two-storey suite, which is built around the shared rituals of gathering, dining, retreating and rest. According to Magugu, each space is designed to deepen the guest’s connection to place.
“After two years of planning and production, the level of care is evident in the narrative layering, emotional backbone, and craftsmanship throughout,“ Magugu said. “The result is a delicate balance between English grandeur and African sensuality.“
“This project has allowed me to explore how fashion can live beyond the body – extending into space and atmosphere.“
The Suite’s lower level opens with a welcoming lounge and dining area with a discreet wet bar. From there, you’ll find a bespoke dining pendant, inspired by the Basotho hat from Thebe Magugu’s lineage, alongside handcrafted dining chairs and hand-sketched panoramic wallpaper that traces South Africa’s landscapes from the Midlands to the Cape.
According to Belmond, the palette of rich greens, deep indigos and warm ochres reflects a mixture of savannahs and English country homes, sitting against terrazzo floors and stone and timber finishes. Upstairs, the king-size bedroom features bespoke patterned textiles, a marble-clad bathroom and a private balcony with views of Lion’s Head. Magugu also curated, in collaboration with contemporary African art specialist, Julia Buchanan, a rotating selection of artworks that speak to the rich history of South African expression.

As the standout feature at Mount Nelson, the Thebe Magugu Suite now joins Belmond’s Signature Suites and Villas portfolio. A category reserved for the most unique and luxurious under the Belmond banner, these suites and villas offer unrivalled local activations and curated experiences, from the traditional Sicilian painting class at Villa Timeo to the former residence of Napoleon Bonaparte. Perhaps even Baz Luhrmann’s new train carriage ‘Celia’ might make the list, but for now, all eyes are on Thebe Magugu’s latest work.
Belmond has confirmed that the Thebe Magugu Suite is now available to book. Reservations are extremely limited and prospective guests will have to join the waiting list for an opportunity to stay, but there is some good news in the meantime. The Thebe Magugu Suite isn’t the only new addition set to land at Mount Nelson.

Magugu House Cape Town
Arriving alongside the Thebe Magugu Suite is a new Magugu House; a living gallery that is set to showcase limited-edition fashion, archival garments, art, photography, books and objects. The space will feature exhibitions by some of South Africa’s most influential creative voices and will rotate quarterly, starting with By Our Own Hands, an exploration of the works of Zanele Muholi and Zizipho Poswa.
“Mount Nelson has always been a place where culture lives and evolves,” Patrick Fisher, general manager of Mount Nelson said. “This collaboration with Thebe Magugu allows us to go deeper – to create spaces that are not only beautiful, but purposeful and rooted in place. Both the Thebe Magugu Suite and Magugu House Cape Town reflect our belief that true luxury is slow, thoughtful and locally resonant.”
In many ways, Thebe Magugu’s latest collaboration with Belmond is a fully realised expression of the designer’s Afro-Modernist ethos, translated from garment to space. The suite weaves African lineage, craft and contemporary storytelling into the fabric of a storied 19th-century setting. In extending fashion beyond the body, Magugu offers a unique vision of African luxury that has one foot in the contemporary and the other in the past.
